Around the turn of the century,
Gulangyu Islet (aka Kolongsoo) was an International Settlement, and host
for 14 foreign consulates. They even had their own international police!
Gulangyu was the
birthplace of Dr. Walter H. Brattain,
the co-inventor of
the transistor. Another illustrious laowai was Dr.
Patrick Manson, "Father of Modern Tropical Medicine."
Today, Gulangyu Island is a museum of Western architecture. Enjoy a delightful
stroll around the island (cars and bikes forbidden!), and views of gardens,
beaches, and beautiful edifices like the former American consulate and
British consulate (now a coin museum). Visit the beautifully preserved
Gulangyu Catholic Church (which offers English services on Sunday mornings).
Also visit the new Gulangyu Mall and enjoy tradtional
music performances in the courtyard. They're free--which is fortunate
because by now you'll have emptied your pockets on fine pearls at Pearl
World, local handicrafts, and, of course, fine food.
