From
'76 to '78, Bill Brown was a young airman in the U.S. Air Force in Taiwan,
never dreaming that 10 years later, he and his wife, Susan Marie (a blond
American who was born and raised in Taiwan--so "Made in Taiwan")
and two sons, Shannon and Matthew (6 months and 2 years old, respectively)
would settle on the opposite side of the Dire Taiwan Straits to become
the first foreigners Permanent Resident in Fujian Province.
Asked why he moved to mainland China, Bill responded, "Because Chinese
food is too expensive in America."
Armed
with such lofty ideals, Dr. Brown has been teaching graduate business
in Xiamen University's MBA Center by day,
and eating lots of Chinese food by night. Between meals, he's written
textbooks on Organizational Behavior and Business Strategy ,
over 60 articles for dozens of magazines and newspapers, several television
documentaries, and books such as "Fujian
Adventure," "Amoy Magic--Guide
to Xiamen,""Mystic Quanzhou--City
of Light, "Discover Gulangyu",
"Magic Fujian," "Xiamen
University--Strength of the Nation," etc.
In spite of his writings, in 1992 he became Fujian Province's 1st foreigner
granted Permanent Residence, and in 1993 received the Friendship Award
from Premier Li Peng. When asked his impressions of the ancient city of
Beijing, he replied, "I loved the Beijing fried duck."

Tibet
& Back In 1994, Dr. Brown and his wife and two
young sons drove their van, "Toy Ota," over 40,000 km around
China, up the coast from Xiamen to Hangzhou,
Suzhou, Nanjing, Qingdao, Beijing, to Mongolia and down to the Gobi Desert,
and across the silk road (which really wasn't all that silky) to Qinghai,
Lhasa, Tibet, and back to Xiamen via Szechuan, Kunnan, Guizhou, Guanxi,
and Guangdong. They were impressed with the scope and pace of change in
every corner of China, and loved the food, but were not overly impressed
with Tibetan buttered tea.
But
40,000 km of driving taught the Browns that there is no place like home--especially
when home is the magical island of Amoy (now Xiamen).

Dr.
Bill graduated from High School in Bartow, Florida, Polk County (he was
known then as Eddie Brown). He served in the Air Force in MacDill Air
Force Base, Tampa, CCK in Taiwan, Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Lackland
Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, and in Ankhara, Turkey
(while in the OSI-- Air Force Office of Special Investigation). One of
his hobbies is Magic (formerly a professional member of the Magic Castle
in Hollywood--hence the "magic theme" in his books and website s).
The Brown Family's home is Xiamen, but when visiting the
U.S. they hang their hats in Reedley,
California, which Bill thinks is "the biggest
little town in America." Click
here to read more about this delightful little town, the nearby giant
sequoias, and the delightful Sequoia
RV Ranch.
