Mosques and Islamic Heritage
(Under construction; I will add more text, and photos,
as soon as I can).
According to a M¨ªng Dynasty granite stele that I saw in the F¨²zh¨u
mosque¡¯s courtyard, of the 4 disciples Mohammed sent to China, 2 came
to Qu¨¢nzh¨u, start of the Maritime Silk Route. Whether true
or not, Quanzhou had at least 7 mosques at one time, and 40,000 adherents
of Islam, and the remains of the beautiful Ashab Mosque still stand.
It was modeled after a mosque in Damascus, but the dome collapsed during
an earthquake in the 1600s. Worship service, are still held on Fridays.
Plans are underway to rebuilt the mosque, but they've been telling me
that since January, 1989, so I'm not holding my breath. However,
Quanzhou did recently complete the Islamic Heritage Center, which is right
beside the Quanzhou Maritime Museum (which has an astonishing collection
of 100s of ancient tombstones and inscriptions--Islamic, Nestorian, Franciscan
Christian, Hindu, and who knows what else).
Xiamen
Muslim Mosque (Q¨©ngzh¨¥ns¨¬ ÇåÕæËÂ) Xi¨¤m¨¦n
was part of Qu¨¢nzh¨u, and had its best port, so its possible Muslims
arrived early on. Some
records claim Muslim traders sailed into Xi¨¤m¨¦n during Koxinga¡¯s day
and built a mosque here. An elegant white mosque was built on Zh¨ngsh¨¡n
L¨´ in the 1840s. The present mosque is on the 4th floor of #27 G¨ngyu¨¢n
N¨¢n L¨´. In early 2006 the Xi¨¤men government announced that as part
of a 7 million Yuan project to help minorities, they were helping Xi¨¤m¨¦n
Muslims to renovate the mosque and to build a Muslim cemetery in T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n
(ÄÂ˹ÁÖ¹«Ä¹).
