Xiamen International Cartoon of Bill and cat running xiamen international marathonMarathon!

The Xiamen International Marathon now has an English Website. The Link is below (which means you'll have to read on about our marvelous marathon before leaving good ole Amoymagic.com!

Xiamen's 1st International Marathon, held on March 31st, 2003, attracted 12,064 runners from 35 countries and regions. The winner, Hailu Negussie of Ethiopia, finished the 42.195 km race with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 3 seconds.

Xiamen's 2nd Marathon was held on March 27, 2004, and be sponsored by the China Association of Field and Track and the Xiamen Municipal Government. The top Chinese runners from this event were chosen as the marathoners to enter the Athens Olympic Games, as well as the 2004 China Marathon Tournament.

Common Talk to the Rescue!

Fortunately, Ms. Vivian Chang of Xiamen Daily's Common Talk is trying to nail down the procedures for us Laowai (foreigners) to sign up. Here's what she's come up with so far (for more updates, check out Common Talk, each Wednesday). To sign up, contact the list of Authorized Travel Agencies at the bottom of this page.

The event's 4divisions: Full marathon, half marathon, 10 km race, and 5 km race.

Age requirement:
Full or Half Marathon: 18 or older (born before Dec. 31, 1986), with minimum of 2 years marathon training, and physically fiT.
10-Kilometer race: 15 or older (born before Dec. 31, 1989),
5-Kilometer race: 13 or older (born before Dec. 31, 1991)

Sign Up Times (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Full Marathon: Feb. 1 - Feb. 25, 2004
Half Marathon: Feb. 26- Mar. 10, 2004

10 & 5 Km. Races: Mar. 11-24
Location: Xiamen Sports Stadium Center, Southern Gate

When signing up, present I.D. card, insurance policy (provided by the organizing committee on the spot), and pay 100 Yuan cash deposit, for the electronic timing chip (deposit is refundable after the race with presentation of receipt and return of the number cloth).

2004 Xiamen International Marathon & National Marathon Championships

Rules and Regulations

(Preliminary Draft)

I. Sponsors:

Chinese Athletic Association (CAA)

Xiamen Municipal Government

II. Date, Time & Place of Starts:

8:00am, March 27, 2004/Xiamen, China


III. Races include:

1. Men/women marathon

2. Men/women half marathon

3. Men/women 10km races

4. Men/women 5km races

5. National Marathon Championships will only include men/women marathon; the entrants, registered athletes with CAA, will be ranked in separate division.


IV. Age limits:

1. For men/women marathon or half marathon, participation is open to runners aged 18-over (born on Dec. 31, 1986 and before), with at least two years¡¯ training of marathon.

2. For men/women 10km races, participation is open to runners aged 15-over (born on Dec. 31, 1989 and before).

3. For men/women 5km races, participation is open to runners aged 13-over (born on Dec. 31, 1991 and before).

V. Competition:

1. The races are conducted in accordance with Rules and Regulations for Track & Field 2002 certified by CAA.

2. Running bibs will be issued by Race Office of the Organizing Committee.

3. There is only one start for all races.

4. Time limits to complete races:

Events Marathon Half marathon 10km 5km

Time limits 6 hours 3 hours 1.5 hours 1 hour

5. Athletes who participate in this competition will be subject to formal drug testing.

6. For finishers of marathon in less than 6 hours & the top 8 finishers of half marathon/10km/5km, a finisher¡¯s certificate will be issued, on presentation of the running bid, by the Registration Office of the Organizing Committee.

7. The rest of half marathon/10km/5km finishers within time limits should fill out the finisher¡¯s certificate on their own. (Blank finisher¡¯s certificates will be issued to all entrants along with their running bibs.)

VI. Finishers' recognition & awards:

1. Marathon:

a. World best: US$100,000

b. Ranks awards (US$):

Ranks 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th

c. Top performance awards (RMB):

l 10,000 will be awarded to men marathon finishers with a result of less than 2 hours and 10 minutes, or women marathon finishers of less than 2 hours and 30 minutes.

l 5,000 will be awarded to men marathon finishers of less than 2 hours and 15 minutes, or women marathon finishers of less than 2 hours and 35 minutes.

l Ranks awards and top performance awards will not be given out two-fold, i.e., awardees sould choose the higher award.

d. Team awards (RMB):

l Team scoring is based on the total numbers of marathon finishers (men in less than 3 hours, women in less than 3 hours and 40 minutes). Teams with 12-over such finishers will be awarded ?5,000; 8-over such finishers, ?3,000; 5-over such finishers, ?2,000.

l Teams with 50-over marathon finishers in less than 6 hours will be awarded ?3,000; teams with 100-over such finisher, ?10,000.

l The above awards will not be given out two-fold, i.e., the awardees should choose the higher one.

e. All marathon finishers will receive a finisher¡¯s certificate, a bath towel and a finisher medal.

2. Half marathon:

a. The top 3 men/women finishers will receive a cup, a finisher medal, a sport suit and a finisher¡¯s certificate.

b. The 4th-8th men/women finishers will receive a finisher medal, a sport suit and a finisher¡¯s certificate.

c. All half-marathon finishers within the time limit will receive a finisher medal.

3. 10km/5km races:

a. The top men/women finishers will receive a cup, a medal, a sport suit and a finisher¡¯s certificate.

b. The 2nd-8th men/women finishers will receive a medal, a sport suit and a finisher¡¯s certificate.

c. The top 200 10km finishers will receive a finisher medal.

VII. Application:

1. All applicants must fill out the Entry Form and Statement by the Entrant.

2. The team applicants should hand in the Entry Form with an official stamp and the stamp by a medical care dept.

3. Entry deadline: Application is possible until Feb. 25, 2004 (postmark). Late application will not be accepted.

4. Locations:

a. CAA-registered members should send two Entry Forms under separate cover to Track & Field Center of CAA (F/2, Xianglong Building, A-3 Longtan Road, Chongwen, Beijing 100061, Tel. 86-10-76100723, Fax 86-10-67140801) and Xiamen Sports Bureau.

b. Non-CAA-registered members outside Xiamen should send the Entry Form to Public Sports Dept. of Xiamen Sports Bureau (No. 2, Tiyu Road, Xiamen 361012, Tel. 86-592-5121237, Fax 86-592-5121234).

c. Non-CAA-registered members in Xiamen should apply at Basketball & Volleyball Gymnasium of Xiamen Sports Center, Feb. 5, 2004 through March 5, 2004. Late application will not be accepted.
