Millionaire¡¯s
Row
Two stone lions guarded the Zhouning City Bridge. Zhouning is also called
the Lion City (Shi Cheng¡ªÊ¨³Ç) because two mountains supposedly resemble
lions. It reminded me of Fuzhou¡¯s claim to having a mountain resembling
the character ¡°Fu.¡± (¸£). I still think that claim was made by Fu Ling
Yu.
The expensive new apartments lining both sides of ¡°Millionaire¡¯s Row¡±
(Baiwan Fuyini Jie °ÙÍò¸£Òô½Ö) reminded me of Fuding. Zhouning folk are
born entrepreneurs. Fully 30,000 of the 190.000 population work elsewhere¡ªover
20,000 work in the Shanghai Pudong area alone. An official told me, ¡°We
Zhouning people are capable, skilled, and know how to use our heads. We
saw Pudong¡¯s potential before almost anyone.¡±
The ink was still wet on Pudong¡¯s development plans when Zhouning folk
flocked to Shanghai. They got a toehold, then a foothold, and then invited
their family and friends to help them get a stranglehold. And the money
has flowed back into new homes in their ancestral hometown¡¯s Millionaire¡¯s
Row. But as my friend said, ¡°Alas, they¡¯re all too busy getting rich
to live here!¡±
An enterprising Zhouning couple that does live at home is the 24 and 25
year olds who started MinDong¡¯s most unique tea factory.
Mr. Wu Chao Yang £¨Îâ³±Ñô£© and Miss Chi Hong Ying (³ØºìÓ¢) began business
blissfully ignorant about tea. All they knew is that tea is made by drowning
defenseless tea leaves in boiling water. But they sought university experts¡¯
advice, imported cutting edge Taiwanese technology, and now they are the
#1 tea producers in all of Mindong¡ªno mean feat, given that Mindong is
Fujian¡¯s top tea producer.
Today, research students flock to Zhouning to study the firm, and in 2000
they received two national awards, including the prestigious Beijing 2000
Tea Research Gold Award. Their highland green tea is prized nationwide,
especially up north in Harbin and Beijing. ¡°Our tea is the best because
of the high altitude, clean air, and pure water.¡±
¡°Really?¡± I said. ¡°That¡¯s the recipe for pretty girls.¡±
¡°Then there must be something to it¡± he said.
