Korean
Cuisine (H¨¢ngu¨® Li¨¤ol¨« º«¹úÁÏÀí)
Korea is a peninsula thrust into the Pacific, so it¡¯s
no surprise Koreans love seafood. As in Japan, fish, pickles and rice
are mainstays. Unlike Japanese, Ko-reans can afford to cook their fish¡ªbut
still can¡¯t afford chairs. Koreans also eat meat¡ªmore pork in
the north, and beef in the south.
Korean cuisine includes flavorful casseroles and stews, soups, grilled
or stir-fried entr¨¦e, and of course the infamous ¡°Kimchi¡± (pickles,
which can be made of just about anything that will sit still long enough
to be in a pickle).
Meals are spice up with pungent fermented chili pastes and soybean pastes
(Korean Airlines hands them out in little toothpaste tubes; I always take
a couple home to liven up my lunches).
