XMU Personnel
Xiamen University's ICE Office used to handle the hiring
of teachers from abroad, but now it is handled by the very helpful Miss
Marina Yu, at XMU Personnel. E-mail her your resume and queries;
she has great English, and will respond promptly. Visit Personnel's
Job Page. Suggestion: contact the departments directly, and
if they are interested, have them contact Marina (though because of the
language barrier, you may want to e-mail Marina if you don't get a response
to an e-mail written in English).
Our
Job Connections page has links to over 20 teaching
opportunities in Xiamen as well a a few other
places in Fujian province. But if
I were you I'd try for a job at Xiamen University!
It is China's most beautiful campus, and located in Xiamen (former Amoy),
internationally recognized as China's most
livable city. When we moved here in 1988, planning on a year
or two. Unless we're kicked out, we'll never leave!
XMU is the only "Key" university in a
Special Economic Zone, and the first founded by an Overseas Chinese.
And though Beijing and Shanghai schools may be more famous for now, we
are catching up! In December 2007, our Management College hosted
an international event on campus with Harvard Business School, and afterwards,
one of the HBS faculty, who is also very familiar with universities in
Beijing and China, said, "Xiamen University
is becoming the Harvard of China!"
So Click Here to join the faculty of the
most beautiful campus on the planet.
Supplement
The Office of International Cooperation
and Exchange (ICE) used to be called the Office of Foreign Affairs
but I think they changed the name be-cause I was also joking that their
job was to oversee foreigners¡¯ ¡°affairs,¡± or that they were Huai Ban
(bad affairs) instead of Wai Ban (foreign affairs). But I actually prefer
the new name, ICE, because now I can call them ICE Agents (which sounds
like villains in a James Bond movie).
But for all my joking about ICE, they are the ones who make XMU
life pos-sible and pleasant for us Laowai (foreigners)¡ªbut it hasn¡¯t
always been easy for them. For most of the past 20 years, the ICE office
was small, cramped, and understaffed (and many of the staff did not even
speak a foreign language, which I found strange for folks who were supposed
to handle foreigners). But ICE now has a large, modern office, and the
large staff is highly trained and highly motivated to lead XMU
on her ¡°Go into the World.¡± Thanks in large part to ICE, XMU
is indeed going into the world¡ªand it seems that the entire world is
coming to XMU as well.
Foreigners
used to be so rare on XMU that even I stared at
them (though I usually didn¡¯t point). But nowadays XMU
has dozens of foreign teachers and well over 1600 foreign students. And
it seems that not a week goes by that we don¡¯t have a foreign delegation
or a major international academic conference on campus. Our XMU
is truly an international university, with exchange programs with prestigious
universities in dozens of countries and regions, but you can be sure that
whenever XMU ¡°Walks into the World¡±, it is the agents
of ICE who have taken the first step and made it possible. In addition,
the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, which is with ICE,
has been instrumental in ensuring that XMU has closer
ties with Taiwan than any other mainland university (which I appreciate,
since my wife was born in Taiwan, and I lived there as well).
Thank
you, ICE, for 20 years of friendship and support.
Dr. Bill
