Wang Yanan
was born in 1910 and devoted his entire life to teaching and doing research
on Marxian political economics and supporting student movements.
At the beginning of 1949, Wang had to stay in Hong Kong to survive the
so called ¡°darkness before the dawn¡±. According to his friend Tao Dayong,
who lived downstairs and worked nights, Wang arose well before dawn every
day to study and write. So before Tao was ready for bed early each morning,
the light in Wang¡¯s room was already on.
Another example of Wang¡¯s hard work was his discipline in learning for-eign
languages. There were times during the war when his entire school had
no rice to eat. Wang, together with some of his students, went to the
gov-ernment in Hunan Province to ask for rice, and even while staying
in the hotel there, Wang arose early every morning to read German aloud.
During the Cultural Revolution, when Wang was forced to stay home and
write self-criticisms, he never missed a single day of studying French.
Within only a few months he was able to read the French version of Chairman
Mao books, and he happily wrote to his daughter, ¡°I¡¯m able to understand
another language now, meaning I¡¯ve got one more crutch to help me with
translation work in the future.¡±
In order to devote more time to work, Wang set up a rule for himself:
¡°No theater except on Sunday.¡± He never broke his rule, even when he was
in Shanghai and his favorite ballet group came to perform for two days.
Wang was very excited about seeing the performance, but did not because
none of the performances were on Sunday. While he was ill in the hospital,
he wrote to the Party, ¡°If one stops working even for one day, what¡¯s
the pointing of living a life?¡± [Personally, I could
think of lots of points!]
