This hall¡¯s two most unusual and precious objects are a desk and a Lin
Yutang stamp. Lin Yutang taught longer in Xiamen University than Lu Xun.
He was also the director of the art college and a secretary of the Chinese
college, as well as a professor of the foreign language department. Lin
is the one who recommended that Lu Xun come teach in Xiamen University.
The Lin Yutang Memorial is on the third floor of the Xiamen University
Library.
Most eye-catching is the old desk, its edge worn completely smooth. It
was at that desk that Mr. Lin completed many excellent essays. Lin Yutang
also mentored his nephew, Lin Yijin, who became a famous English-Chinese
translator. Lin Yijin translated several famous American novels, including
Farewell to Arms and All Quiet on the Western Front.
I took an undergraduate course from Lin Yujin when he was director of
Xiamen University¡¯s foreign language department. Lin Yujin¡¯s daughter,
Lin Mengru, was my classmate in Shuangshi middle school, and she gave
us a tour of the Memorial. Taiwan also has a Lin Yutang memorial, which
the government authorized Foguang University to manage. So the 12 guests
from Foguang University visited the Xiamen Lin Yutang memorial in high
spirits and carefully examined every object on display. We drew special
attention to a stamp in honor of Lin Yutang. That stamp was issued by
the Taiwan post-office on Lin Yutang¡¯s 100th birthday (October 10, 1995).
Co-incidentally, the Xiamen University Lin Yutang memorial was set up
on the very same day. The stamp bears an image of Lin, smiling slightly.
Many mainland literature anthologies list Mr. Lin among the Taiwan writers,
but many Taiwan literati regard him as a mainland writer. Is Mr. Lin a
mainland writer or a Taiwan writer? I am afraid we would need to ask Mr.
Lin himself. I prefer to think Lin Yutang belongs to both sides of the
Taiwan Strait, to both mainland China and Taiwan.
