Lu Xun, ¡°Father of Modern Chinese Literature,¡±
was also in a sense the ¡°father¡± of our Anthropology Museum, which was
the first in New China.
In the Fall of 1926, Lu Xun held an exhibition
of cultural relics at XMU and set up a Cultural
Exhibition Center in the School of Chinese Studies. Lu
Xun did not stick around long, but he¡¯d gotten the ball rolling,
and in 1934, Professor Lin Huixiang created a Director¡¯s Office for the
Anthropology Museum, Xiamen,
and after 1949 he donated all of his cultural relics and books to the
university.
In 1952, the National Education Ministry authorized XMU
to establish an anthropology museum, which was opened to the public in
1953 for the purposes of anthropological research, teaching and social
education. The center has performed research on the New Stone Age era
of S.E. China (mainly Fujian and Taiwan)
and S.E. Asian, Chinese and foreign maritime transportation in Quanzhou
(start of the Maritime Silk Route), ancient kilns (Dehua
was one of China¡¯s key ancient porcelain centers), and ancient Chinese
exports. The Center has also studied the relationships between the ancient
Yue, She, Gaoshan, and S.E. nationalities.
The center has a corridor of steles, 32 exhibition rooms, 4,575 ancient
and modern exhibits, and over 7110 books or journals. The 3 main divisions
are: Hall of Genesis, Evolution of Culture, and Hall of National Relics
from Home and Abroad.
The Hall of Genesis, and Evolution of Culture display: Stone Age artifacts,
ancient currency, porcelain, paintings, weapons, sculptures, calligraphy,
etc. The National Relics Hall has cultural relics from China, India, Australia,
and South East Asian countries.
The center has published Research on Anthropology, History of the She
Nationality, History of Gaoshan Nationality, Zheng Chenggong and Gaoshan
Nationality, etc.
