Lu Xun's English Corner!
It is ironic that for many years, Lu Xun, the
¡°Father of Modern Chinese Literature¡± and former XMU teacher, has been
forced to endure throngs of people surrounding him at night practicing
English!
The Tuesday and Friday night English Corners, held from about 9 PM until
whenever the last few straggle off into the night, are the best place
for Chinese and foreigners to meet because they are attended regularly
by both Overseas Education College foreigners
and XMU foreign teachers. Some diehard foreign teachers
even manage two English Corners on Friday nights. They hit the Zhangzhou
campus across the bay at 7 PM, and then take the ferry back to catch another
batch of English learners besieging the statue of Lu
Xun.
No one knows anymore who started this English Corner because it has become
a self-organized activity, taking on a life of its own. You can expect
to meet all kinds of people there, from students and teachers to busi-ness
people, doctors, lawyers¡ªvirtually anyone wanting to improve their English.
But as of November 27th, 2004, our illustrious Lu
Xun is finally able to see and hear the language he loved being used
by Chinese and for-eigners alike because Robin and friends organized as
one of the Putonghua (¡°Standard Chinese,¡± or Mandarin) Art Association
activities a Chinese Corner for foreigners. The Chinese Corner is every
Sunday evening from 7 PM until as late as you want to stay.
I think Mr. Lu Xun, who once taught at XMU, must
be happy to see this marriage of Chinese and Western languages taking
place right around him.
