Remembering
Wally Develder
By Joann Hill, March 1, 2005..
Read
Wally's
Memoirs (90
Years!)
I was 7 years old and living with my folks, Nelson
and Stella Veenschoten, in Changchow
( south coast of Fukien, China) when ¡°Uncle
Wally¡± began his short term missionary service teaching at Talmage College
just a few blocks from our house. It didn¡¯t take us long to discover that
our May birthdays were just two days apart¨Ca special bond! Later,
when he returned as a career missionary and I was away in Shanghai at
the American School, he began the custom of exchanging Birthday card greetings.
In 1947, when Jack and I arrived in Amoy as career missionaries, my relationship
with the other missionaries on the field, whom I had called ¡°Uncle¡± and
¡°Aunt¡± as a child, had changed. They were now our colleagues. Now that
fun guy with a delightful ready chuckle was ¡°Wally¡±. The relationship
had changed--but Wally hadn¡¯t. In the ensuing years our two families have
spent hours and days together at work and leisure in China and later in
the Philippines. These ¡°family ties¡± still hold firm today --bonds begun
so many years ago between a little girl and a young chap fresh out of
college in a land and among a people we both have come to love.
Note: Joann
added on 30 Oct., 2007, "Walley DeVelder's first wife was Margaret
Otte, daughter of Dr. Joh Otte! Margaret died
in Hope Hospital during childbirth. Very sad time for every body..."
