Amoy
Mission in 1877
Edwin & Elizabeth Koeppe
Children: Roger:
born May 2, 1922, Amoy Hope Hospital.
Owen: born May 29, 1926 in U.S.
Ruth: born
Feb. 20th, 1931 in Tong'an
The Koeppes were here
in Amoy from 1919 to 1951; and one of the
last families to leave. I know little about them, but Roger's
daughter, Sarah, e-mailed us after learning about our website from the
New York Time's Travel section, and she may be able to provide more photos,
as well as some content from Roger's
and Owen's China memoirs. In 1982, Roger
and Norma Koeppe, Owen and JoAnn Koeppe,, Ruth Koeppe, and Eleanor Holleman
(daughter of Dr. Holleman), returned to
visit Amoy. This was before tourism really
caught on (academic connections, Sarah said). JoAnn wrote that they flew
to Hong Kong, took a boat to Amoy (as did our family when we came in 1988),
and stayed three days. "For my sister-in-law Norma and me it
was wonderful to see for ourselves places that had only been described
to us. Of course Roger, Owen, Ruth and Eleanor grew up there."
By the way--Happy 86th Birthday, Dr.
Roger Koeppe! This award-winning scientist was born May
2, 1922, in
Hope Hospital.
And May 29th is Owen's birthday (born in the U.S. during parent's furlough).
