Our Animals (in Amoy)
by Girard (Gary) Veenschoten, M.D.
When I was about 4 we had a little Pekinese that
we called cocoa. Dad and mother always thought that having animals around
was essential to being a family. I don¡¯t know what happened to cocoa,
but I adored him, almost as much as my ragged old teddy bear.
When we came back from furlough in 1925, we gathered in "Puddy".
This was one that we garnered from somewhere. He was a white long haired
dog with a black spot on his left side. My sister, Joann, was a toddler
of about three and she couldn't say spotty. She called him "Puddy".
He was such a lot of fun. We romped and played all together. But he was
horrible to wash. That was always my job! Well, I guess that I am none
the worse for wear because of it. Puddy stayed with us through thick and
thin. When we had the bombing raid in 1934 he went to the basement with
us. When we had to evacuate down to Xiamen
(Amoy), he went with us. When we went to Toa Bo Swan (Tai Ma Shan), that
is big hat mountain, he was there with bells on. He never ran away. But
he always had to go over the wall --to play with the girls. And then he
had to have another bath. He was scared to death of firecrackers, because,
I believe, someone shot at him when we had to be evacuated in 1934. But
later he came back. Someone had fed him for us till we returned.
My memory may be a little vague on the dates. But in 1938, when I was
in lab one day at Hope College in Holland [Michigan], mother sent me a
letter saying that he had died--
We have always had cats. The first one was a stray, striped gray kitten.
We always carried him around. I remember my sister, Joann, would dress
him up in doll clothes and lull him to sleep in her doll buggy. He would
lay there all afternoon. But pretty soon he would have to go to the bathroom.
And he would come thump, thumping down the stairs in his long doll dress.
And he would come up to us with the most pitiful look in his eyes. Cats
can¡¯t talk? His name was Jupiter, because he was the king of the gods,
wasn't he? He had to have a playmate. So we got another very red striped
cat. His name had to be mercury. Juppie had to have a messenger, didn't
he?
Just like our assistants, the servants, our animals stayed with us for
a very long time.
Mother always had a few chickens, along with a goose or two for Thanksgiving
and Christmas. They would get to cackling in chorus, especially when
it was time for feeding. Very often I couldn't sleep in the morning. I
might get up at 5:30! I just couldn¡¯t understand why every body else didn't
get up. But I made sure that the chickens were rousted up.
We always got together with the Vander Meers, who had charge of our Christian
high school, for Christmas. We always had goose. And Tanta Alma would
make the best tasting roast goose with apple stuffing, just like they
made it in Denmark.
